Morning Type is the type foundry and font production studio of Matthew Smith based in Brooklyn, New York.
Considering this is a one person operation, I am going to speak in the first person and use this space to speak candidly about “us.”
After years of building brands and drawing type, I started Morning Type in early 2020 in an attempt to build the kind of business that I wanted to see.
I found myself asking questions like: How does a business operate sustainably and ethically under capitalism? Can a business be transparent with money? Shouldn’t all businesses contribute back to their communities? What if businesses tracked and disclosed their carbon footprint? Better yet, imagine if they offset it.
I wish I could tell you more, but Morning Type is still a new company and I’m trying to see how I can address these questions.
As for what Morning Type does, I’m not interesting in overly complicated language. It is very simple: I draw fonts that are interesting, and I design brand identities that are engaging.
